Short review: This is the best Kindle reading experience I've had. Yes, this is pricey, but if you're going to use it daily, it's so worth it!

Long review:

I have had all of the Kindle e-reader models except for the first one. My husband bought me the K2 because he got tired of lugging an extra suitcase for books. (How do I know what I want to read? I need a selection!) So I've been in love with Kindles since 2009. I have the 2016 Oasis (named Robinson) and it's beautiful and light. It took me about 5 seconds to decide to buy the 2017 model, and it was delivered Halloween, as we were setting up decorations.

I have had Sanctuary (my 2017 Kindle's name) for two days now, and I am IN LOVE! The screen is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. I thought the lighting was even on the 2016 Oasis, but it's even more clear and bright on the 2017 model. I didn't like the auto-light thing on the 2016 Oasis, but because there are more lights around Sanctuary's edges, it seems to work better.

As always, when you first set up an e-reader and load it with books, it slows down as the processor is busy indexing. It also burns through the battery pretty quickly. But after that, it settles down. I think the processor is actually a little quicker than my older one.

While this is extremely light compared to the older models, it is a smidge heavier than the 2016 model without the cover. If you include the 2016 battery cover, the 2017 model is lighter.

The larger screen is wonderful. My eyes are getting a little old, and with the larger size and clearer screen, the reading experience is even better than the older Oasis. Yes, I know you can enlarge the font, and I do, but the words just look better when they're in the proper proportion on the page. The only thing that I don't absolutely love about my new toy is that it's too big for me to comfortably pick it up by the sides one handed. The screen is perfect, and the real page turning buttons make me happy, so I can't figure out how to make it fit my hand without making it smaller.

I was used to the odd shape in back (super thin on one side, a little thicker on the button side) and it works even better here since this is a little heavier. You hold it by the thick end so the weight rests on your palm, even though you're holding it mostly upright. The page flips over when you change hands. I prefer holding my books with my left hand. You can switch the page forward/back buttons. I prefer the lower one to page forward, but the default is the other way.

I bought the 32gb version because I listen to audiobooks a lot, but I actually haven't set that up yet. When you first turn the Oasis on, it will walk you through setting up your wifi and bluetooth. You can skip anything you want and then go into settings later to update whatever you want.

I don't have a cover yet. I think I'll need one because it drives me nuts to pick this up and touch the screen while I'm taking it around the house. Fingerprints aren't a problem - I never notice them while I'm reading, but it's just weird.

The operating system upgrade where you can change the boldness of the font is great - it makes reading a lot easier for me. I think this upgrade is coming to the other models too.

I am so not intentionally submerging this in water to see how waterproof it is. Other online reviewers tried it with no ill effects, but I'm not going to chance it. If I accidentally dump this in the pool or bathtub, I'll edit this review with the results.

I will update this review once I play with the audio. I love that idea. I've got bluetooth noise cancelling headphones coming. (Can you use bluetooth on a plane?)

5.0 out of 5 stars I thought I would write up a few thoughts on my new Kindle Oasis and the Leather Cover, I am not a "reviewer" per se, but when I was searching couldn't find much in the review space that was of use to me, so maybe this will be useful to some.
About my reading habits: I read every day for pleasure, on a workday I get about an hour of reading time, and on uneventful weekends about 3 hours a day. On travel days I can get as much as 5-6 hours depending on the trip. I have the ability to read from multiple sources and can read from my phone and computer without issue.
I prefer a Kindle and have since the early days. 3 reasons stick out for me. 1. The ability to adjust font size (I am now on the right side of 50 but just barely) 2. I read multiple genres and mix fiction and non-fiction and love having multiple titles in one spot. (my job has me on the road about a week a month) 3. I am picky, I will not finish a title just because I bought it, borrowed it, or whatever. If I begin the title and find I am not interested I dump it and start something else.

My eReader devices over the years: Nook 1st gen, iPad replaced the nook for a short time, iPhone 6+, Kindle regular style, Kindle PaperWhite, and now the Kindle Oasis. The screen on the PaperWhite cracked, and I am not sure how, but couldn't focus on the device in that condition and I had some extra tech money burning a hole in my pocket so I now have the latest gen Kindle Oasis, and purchased the Leather Cover for it, links below so we are on the same page.

Kindle Oasis
Without a doubt the best eReader I have owned. It is snappier than my previous dedicated devices and the buttons are a welcome addition for me. The legibility and size do not lend much additional value to me vs. the paper white. I was very happy with that size, but am pleased with the larger Oasis size as well. The bump on the back is a welcome addition, however it is lost with the leather cover installed, and folded back. I have found that the auto-dimming backlight is buggy to say the least. There have been 3 times in the month that I have owned the device where I had to turn it off, turn it on go to settings and cycle the auto backlight feature off and on. I now leave it off permanently. The battery life seems to be shorter than my paper white, but that could be anecdotal, as I have not kept close track. I use the device as mentioned above, with light about 60%, wifi/bluetooth on and get a week plus before I notice it getting low. Inverting the device and the buttons working in the same location on both sides is perhaps my favorite feature! I swap hands often when reading and loath swiping with my finger, so that has been the best feature, and one that I would love to see on the entry level device, but alas touchscreen has ruled the day in our world. Regarding value, it is not worth the asking price that I paid $250, there is better use of your cash in the eReader space to be sure, but this is a great device and I don't regret it. I just don't think it is worth $250. It is waterproof which I am sure is important to some, but not I so I can't speak to it.
Pros:
- Bump on the back to grip and dead space on the front to place your thumb
- Beautiful eInk display, and Kindle specific typography (not unique to this device)
- Physical page turn buttons
- Ability to assign page turn buttons to the direction of choice
- Buttons reassign when inverted allowing for right and left hand use
Cons:
- Price, price, price
- Weight
- Auto-dimming feature is buggy
