The lake at the heart of Byrgenwerth. Diving beneath the glimmering waves reveals a staggering plane where you walk on water, the dwelling of Rom.

The many-eyed spider of Byrgenwerth stares off into the horizon of this otherworldly scape under the moon’s gaze, not acknowledging your presence. Is it because the Great One yet lacks insight of its kin of dreams, or because it is so focused on hiding true enlightenment?

    General Notes

    • Rom, the Vacuous Spider is not hostile when you first enter the area, so you can run right up to him without risk, and only once you hit him will the fight begin. Upon killing Rom, a mysterious apparition will appear in the middle of the lake, and when you approach it a cut-scene will trigger. After the scene you'll find yourself back in the Cathedral Ward, standing in front of a newly-opened door. Going through that door takes you back into Yahar'gul, Unseen Village, where things are quite different than before. Time will also have moved forward at this point, and night will have turned to Blood Moon. If you drop down into the lake again from Byrgenwerth, a new Lamp will appear so that you can leave the area again.

    World Changes

    • Approach Queen Yharnam after Rom is defeated : Changes time of day from Night to Blood Moon | The door in Cathedral Ward that leads to Yahar'gul, Unseen Village (Blood Moon) will open | Hypogean Gaol Lamp is destroyed

  • Old Hunter Henryk
    Confederate
: On the second floor, between two couches near the treasure chest.
  • He will not appear unless you have defeated him at the Tomb of Oedon and are wearing the " Impurity " rune.
  • Younger Madaras Twin : Right next to the Byrgenwerth lamp. Walk off the little ledge, and it’ll be on that plateu with you, nestled between two trees.
  • You cannot summon him if you have already killed him outside the Small Windmill or are not wearing the " Impurity " rune.
  • Mensis Scholar Damian : In plain view outside the boss room.
  • Bear in mind that summoning him will prevent you from being able to summon Henryk or the Younger Madaras Twin in Byrgenwerth , but his habit of spamming the Choir Bell makes him well worth the tradeoff.
  • With patch v1.07 you are able to summon NPCs to come to your aid, just like cooperative play, including inside Chalice Dungeons. To do so, first you will need to acquire the “ Old Hunter Bell ” from the messengers in the Hunter’s Dream. In some areas you may be able to summon up to two NPC Hunters.

  • Lunarium :
Provost Willem, the old master of Byrgenwerth College, can be found sitting in his favorite rocking chair out on the Lunarium, gazing up to the moon. Talking to him will only cause him to utter the faintest of groans, while using his cane to point to towards the lake There is little else to be gained from Provost Willem, so you can kill him if you wish. Doing so will reward you with the Eye Caryll Rune, which significantly increases your Discovery rate. Following Provost Willem's directions, however, is advised; if you walk to the end of the Lunarium and look down into the lake you'll notice some mysterious ripples emanating from an area of the lake below. To find out just what secrets are hidden below the surface, take the plunge and jump right in.
