The New York Public Library is here to support you in improving your writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills in English. Whether you are just starting to learn the language, getting better, or are advanced, you can join free in-person and online classes offered at libraries across the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island! Plus, explore digital resources to learn and practice English on your own time.
There are three types of free English classes you can take at the Library: Series-Based English classes, We Speak NYC Conversation classes, and Citizenship Prep & U.S. History classes.

We Speak NYC Conversation Classes
Practice your English in friendly, informal spaces and connect with others in your community! Classes use civic-focused videos, group discussions, and fun activities for beginner, intermediate, and advanced learners.
Check out the full calendar of We Speak NYC classes and choose what works for you. Each class shows if it’s "In Person” or “Online” and which level it is best for “Beginner”, “Intermediate”, or “Advanced”. Online classes require registration through the event listing. In-person classes do not—just show up!
