[mtab] How to edit /proc/self/mounts

Installed Arch on a friend's computer a while back. Seems like he's messed up the recent filesystem update .
During bootup he's getting errors for mounting the local filesystem. Looking at /proc/self/mounts reveals that he's got an entry from one of his external drives in there, which he hasn't connected all the time.
Does anyone know how I can get rid of that wrong entry?

Re: [mtab] How to edit /proc/self/mounts

/proc/self/mounts is generated by the kernel and is not writable

Re: [mtab] How to edit /proc/self/mounts

Thanks for the replies, but no good.
/etc/fstab is clean and there are no automount rules in /etc/udev/rules.d.
I would be interested in other suggestions of what I could do to resolve this issue, if anyone can come up with anything. However, his machine is working, so it's not a major issue. He can work with it. I might go for a re-install when I have the time. Thanks.
