This error occurs when attempting to add the built-in CUPS printer driver. As an alterntive, add the
Apple AirPrint
printer driver, if available, as an alternative until a Brother original CUPS driver is available for your model.
Please visit our macOS 10.12 support statement for an anticipated release schedule of Brother original macOS 10.12 drivers.

How to add the AirPrint printer driver

Printers & Scanners

+ (plus)
button located below the printers list on the left side.
If you receive a pop-up showing "Nearby Printers", click
Add Other Printer or Scanner

Select your machine from the list.
If your network connected machine is not in the list and you want to add it using the IP Address or Node Name, click
IP
at the top of the window and then enter the IP Address or Node Name in the address field. This information can be found on the Network Configuration report from your machine.

list, select the AirPrint driver.

Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) drivers cannot be installed on macOS 10.12 (Sierra). However, in most cases, any drivers that are already installed on Mac OS X 10.11 will work if you leave them installed during the upgrade from 10.11 to 10.12.
