Thanks to its well-established electrical and electronics manufacturing ecosystem, good connectivity, reliable infrastructure and its skilled and multilingual workforce, Penang has in recent years won new chip sector investments from multinationals, including Lam Research, Infineon Technologies, Texas Instruments, Micron Technology, Bosch, Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) and Intel.

Zafrul Aziz, Malaysia’s minister for investment, trade and industry and chair of the national semiconductor task force launched in February, says he was surprised by how much more productive and automated factories in Penang have become.

The investment rush has caught out even Penang’s business-friendly government.

“Improving the ease of doing business in Penang will remain our utmost priority. We will continue to seek and attract strategic high-quality projects and elevate our local companies’ participation in the global value chain while identifying opportunities in the current geopolitical and supply chain divergence environment,” – Dato’ Loo Lee Lian, CEO of InvestPenang.

Malaysia’s vibrant semiconductor industry has been the talk of the town of late as the country emerges as a new semiconductor powerhouse with the global spotlight on Penang.

Penang has in recent years won new chip sector investments from multinationals, including Lam Research, Infineon Technologies, Texas Instruments, Micron Technology, Bosch, Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) and Intel.

Penang, dubbed the Silicon Valley of the East, has a strong E&E ecosystem, having established its long-standing presence in the industry.

Over the past 51 years, the state in north-west Malaysia has attracted a diverse range of local suppliers and fostered a comprehensive value chain. This encompasses automation, electronics, packaging, plastics, precision engineering and metal work, software development and more – all supporting the semiconductor manufacturing value chain.

Penang’s strategic location and comprehensive ecosystem have made it an attractive investment destination for global semiconductor companies.
