Today, many people view Christian faith purely as a form of spiritual holiness (e.g.: accept Christ in the heart, know that he is a child of God, sins are forgiven, or feel it is good enough to have the Lord in the heart, or good enough to love the Lord in the heart, etc). Ask yourself: if the so-called knowing and loving the Lord cannot compel you to feel and be willing to live out the glory of Lord Jesus, how do you know in your heart that you truly love the Lord? In fact, loving the Lord through the Holy Spirit and loving the Lord through your feelings is not the same. Feelings are shallow and can change anytime, the inscription and conviction of the Holy Spirit is stable and goes deeper. Actually, the holiness from the Holy Spirit is firstly, very practical (related to life); secondly, requires unceasing training (deny self daily to follow the Lord); thirdly, continues to extend to every aspect in our living and relationships. In fact, many believers have not clearly comprehended deep in their spirits that their newly born personhood is opposing the old self, so after believing the Lord, they still remain in their past attitudes and behaviours.  There are two main reasons for this: (1) the inscription of the Holy Spirit is not clear; (2) they are not clear about the truth, so in the heart, cannot receive the conviction and warning of the Holy Spirit. Actually, how a believer lives, and even his mentality behind charitable acts, is different from the world. Therefore, when Paul spoke about Gentiles having lost all sensitivity and indulge in impurity, he followed with, “you (new birth in Christ) did not come to know Christ that way”. Actually the born-again believer is one who has received the personhood from the Holy Spirit. It’s a personhood that magnifies God’s word and pursues a holy personhood. The most dangerous thing in faith living is to diminish and drown this personhood, and act totally through flesh. Today, though many believers have believed the Lord and are baptized, the foundations of their judgments and actions are feelings and circumstances. This is similar to how Gentiles live in the futility of their thinking. Actually, our fallen disposition doesn’t come with truth, and cannot give us the correct guidance. Though what we see ahead may be convenient and ideal, walking along this path may not ensure sustained blessings. Instead, we may suffer loss. Therefore, if a believer’s orientation in life is not to abandon his old self, he will not only be unable to be holy, instead, he will be bound by his carnality and sinful body for his whole life. The holiness in the whole life of a believer can be summarized in 3 lines: do not grieve the Holy Spirit <4:30>, find out what pleases the Lord <5:10>, and be filled with the Spirit <5:18>. In conclusion, this should be the life orientation of a “new self” in Christ.
