Under the knife I surrendered,
The innocence your's to consume.
You cut it away, and you filled me up with hate.
Into the silence you sent me, into the fire consumed.
You thought I'd forget, but it's always in my head.
You're the pulse in my veins. You're the war that I wage.
Can you change me? Can you change me?
You're the love that I hate. You're the drug that I take.
Will you cage me? Will you cage me?
You're the pulse in my veins. You're the war that I wage.
Can you change me? Can you change me from the monster you've made me?
From the monster you've made me?
This is the world you've created,
The product of what I've become.
My soul and my youth, seems it's all for you to use.
If I could take back the moment, I'd let you get under my skin.
Relent or resist; Seems the monster always wins.
My heart's north is a decoy soul.
I lift you up and then I let you go.
I've made an art of digging shallow holes.
I'll drop the tiniest seed and watch it grow.
My heart's north is a decoy soul.
Who knew the emptiness could be so cold?
I've lost the parts of me that make me whole.
I am the darkness, I'm a monster!
From the monster you've made me?
From the monster you've made me?
I think this song has so many interpretations, it's hard to pin it down to just one, and that's what makes it so beautiful. Personally, I think it'd be easier to break down the lyrics to discuss the true meaning.
"Under the knife I surrendered, the innocence yours to consume. You cut it away, and you filled me up with hate."
Pretty self-explanatory, the narrator begins the song with a story of someone you love taking advantage of you and essentially ruining your life.
"You're the pulse in my veins. You're the war that I wage. Can you change me? Can you change me?"
Almost like an abusive relationship, no matter how much you are abused, you can still love the person who ruined you.
"You're the love that I hate. You're the drug that I take. Will you cage me? Will you cage me?"
Once again describing the love the narrator holds for this person, despite the toxic environment, and even through knowing what they are putting themselves through, thus the line "will you cage me?"
"You're the pulse in my veins. You're the war that I wage. Can you change me? Can you change me from the monster you've made me?"
Knowing that staying with this person will ruin his/her life, the narrator even begs or pleas, asking the abuser "Can you change me".
"My soul and my youth, seems it's all for you to use. If I could take back the moment, I'd let you get under my skin. Relent or resist; Seems the monster always wins."
I like to picture this as the turning point of the song, the realization that the narrator still loves this abuser and that maybe it's the narrator's fault for letting this person into their life and not pushing them away.
"My heart's an artifice, a decoy soul. I lift you up and then I let you go. I've made an art of digging shallow holes. I drop the darkness in and watch it grow."
At this point in the song is the narrator's realization that maybe its his/her fault after all, letting the abuser into their life and letting it get to them, almost acting as a martyr. Realizing that maybe the monster isn't the abuser, but it's themselves for not standing up and fighting back and instead just letting their emotions get to them. This also hints at feelings of depression and anxiety, the monster actually being themselves and not the people around them.
This song truly does have a very deep meaning, and multiple meanings for people to interpret, of course this is just mine :p
I see heartbreak in the song. I agree there could be many interpretations in regard to the lyrics but mine are personal. I went through a horrible divorce and my wife ex-wife that would be made me a monster. She's the war that I wage she's the drug in my veins and I'm not sure I'll get those lyrics exactly right but I bury her memory only to resurrect it. You're the love that I hate I've lived this for almost 3 years. We were married for almost 17 years and she's the love that I now hate the duplicity is hard for me to understand but it is none the less there. I've made an art of digging shallow holes. In my mind that is saying that I'm going to bury the memory only to dig it back up I don't know this is just my two cents that's the wonderful thing about a song we can all get something different
