Edward Elgar's Salut d'Amour is one of the popular work in the world, and it has been adapted to many versions for different instrument arrangement for its high popularity. Edward Elgar (born in 1857, died in 1934) is the most famous English composer in the nineteenth century. His works includes the substantial chorales with orchestra, orchestras, sonatas and concertos.
In the music era of innovation, he insisted to his faith, that is innovation must be set up on the traditional and also maintain the advantage of British, like calmness and rationality. He put those features into the prevalent elements in his compositions. We can feel the distinctive styles of his works, romantic, lyrical and reserved approaches. He created the music of his own country, and spread the British music to the European continent successfully.
The thesis delves into the analysis of Edward Elgar's Violin and Piano Sonata in E Minor, and it was composed at the end of the First World War. This work shows his insight about the surrounding and his mood, and he also used melody sequence to connect the part of the violin and piano. This thesis has five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction. The second chapter is the research of Elgar's life history and the background of this work. Chapter three is musical analyses. To sum up the first to third chapter, chapter four is depth discussion of the interpretation of Elgar's Violin and Piano Sonata in E Minor, and the final chapter is the conclusion of this thesis. By studying the life of the composers, composing background, as well as the analyses of this work, we might hopefully understand the comprehension of the music, uncover the mind of the composers in musical ideas and then can perfect our performance.
